The story of the band started when the collage students Ola Frick and Carina Johansson got together and began writing songs and gigging throughout their home city of Malmö, Sweden. After a couple of years playing around with different set-ups and styles, their debut 7", 'Air>>>Moon>>> Stereo' EP was released. After quite some success with the EP, the band went on their first US tour supporting the release of their debut album 'June and Novas', which met near unanimous critical approval for its blending of pop hooks, glimmering guitar lines & complex experimental passages. Tracks from 'June and Novas' got heavy rotation on Swedish National Radio, and impressive amounts of sale and attention for a small indie release.
The following years Ola & Carina worked o their second full-length album 'The Orange Billboard', their most ambitious work to date, where the duo
started to fully explore the possibilities of the studio. The album illustrated a significant departure from the Moonbabies' known brand of indiepop, and a change towards a more mature and sophisticated songwriting. The album features a wonderful journey through the finest pop songs the band ever written and was praised with fantastic response from the critics and listeners. The band toured extensively throughout 2004 in Europe, and the album ended up on countless "Best-of-2004" lists that year.
Moonbabies needed exactly two albums to establish themselves as the architects of some of the most exquisite 21st century pop. Compared to the likes of Grandaddy, My Bloody Valentine, Kate Bush and Jim O'Rourke. The Single/Mini-album "War on Sound" was released in 2005 and became an immediate indie-anthem and followed success on radio and TV-shows. In 2007 the band was signed by the swedish label Startracks, and released "Moonbabies at the Ballroom" a somewhat more constructed and song-oriented album, where the band found inspiration from Phil Spector and The Beatles. Highlights of the album including the single "Take me to the Ballroom" were frequently aired on collage radio world-wide and included in several TV shows and commercials.
During 2009 Moonbabies has been residing in Berlin, Germany to work on their 4th full-length album, which is expected to be released later in 2010. Judging by the demo material of the album, the sound is more psychedelic and in parts inspired by the Berlin electronic scene, yet still combines the naturally strong sense of Moonbabies unique brand of pop hooks & melodies.
